Automatic Number Identification (ANI)

Applications of ANI:

• Emergency Services: ANI is crucial for emergency services like 911. It provides the exact phone number of the caller, which helps emergency responders quickly locate the caller's address, even if the caller is unable to provide it.
• Call Routing: In business and customer service environments, ANI helps in routing calls to appropriate departments based on the caller's phone number, improving efficiency and customer experience.
• Billing and Fraud Prevention: ANI assists in billing processes by accurately tracking the origin of calls. It also helps in fraud prevention by verifying the authenticity of the caller’s identity.

ANI vs. Caller ID:

• Scope: While both ANI and Caller ID provide information about the caller, ANI is typically used in more formal or service-oriented contexts such as emergency services, while Caller ID is more commonly used for personal identification.
• Functionality: ANI is designed to provide the phone number of the caller to the recipient’s system, whereas Caller ID displays the caller’s number on the recipient’s phone or device.
• Privacy: ANI information is usually kept confidential and used internally by service providers, whereas Caller ID is often visible to the recipient.

Limitations of ANI:

• Dependence on Network: ANI’s effectiveness can be limited by the network infrastructure. In some cases, particularly with mobile phones and VoIP services, ANI data might not be as accurate.
